About

Sea Captain Foster Homestead

Prior antique lover owners have preserved the beautiful homestead, and most recently, private funding brought it back to its original shape.

History:
The property was built in 1799 by Sea Captain Elishia Foster, son of Captain Isaac Foster. Elishia’s father-in-law, Captain Freeman, offered the original house and large land so his daughter could raise a family nearby. A letter from Elishia to a local person asking for a loan to return from Europe attests to his transporting “honest goods.” Several portraits by Joseph Badger appear to be related to the family and are at the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian.

Main House:
The homestead also represents the Early American simplicity rather than Victorian: Plain, unvarnished woodwork, wide board floors, and very subtle details.

The Barn:

The old barn has the beautiful post and beams character of the time. The Heritage Barn was built as an addition to the original barn and is an ideal recreation space.

Land:
Amidst trees and gardens, the homestead is a picturesque site overlooking three acres of pleasant lawns.

Location:
Located in West Historic Brewster, close to the town’s landmarks:
General Store, GristMill, Herring Run, beaches, and Drummer Boy Park with old Windmill.
